Standard Rig Lasers at Nairn SC 2004

(Report by David Woakes)

The sixth event of the season was held at Nairn Sailing Club on the Moray Firth with sponsorship of the event being provided by Morrison Construction Ltd.

Racing was scheduled to start early on Saturday and a good turnout was present for the start with 17 standard rigs and 19 radial rigs. The forecast F4 westerly wasn't present for the racing and the days races were done in F1-2 with a brief increase in R2 when a puff came through. Playing the shifts became more important as the day went on. 30 minute later the wind increased to F4 much to the competitors disappointment. In the evening a wonderful meal was provided with live music provided later.

Sunday was much better with a solid f5 westerly and after a short delay racing got underway just after 11 with a smaller committee boat because the intended yacht was unable to get out of the harbour because of the tide. With the stronger winds the racing was more interesting and there were a few capsizes and one broken mast. Several competitors retired not feeling up to the pace.
